Embarking on an apprenticeship journey is like stepping on a roller coaster. It has its highs and lows, unexpected twist, periods of calm and moments where you turn a corner. Sometimes you want or need a steady hand to hold on to and other times you embrace the thrill of the ride with gusto.
Now in his 3rd year at BPC, Anthony has been with GF Electrical for two and half years, having started straight after his GCSEs. He has had to work hard to prove his dedication to the course but his skill development in the field has been growing month on month.
Reflecting on his journey, Anthony shared, “Through a combination of on-the-job experience and classroom instruction, I have developed countless skills from the handling of power tools to installing circuits competently. I have also gained crucial skills such as working methodically, fault finding, safety procedures, and teamwork – just as vital for a capable electrician.”
Among the variety of projects, one stands out – working at an industrial client, Bristol Maid’s site. Describing his experience, Anthony mentioned, “Replacing old for new supplies and containment as well as numerous installs in a fast-moving environment has provided me with huge skill development, and a larger grasp on how and where circuits are meant to run in accordance with the regulations and client needs.”
However, the path hasn’t been without its challenges.
Anthony admitted, “Being an apprentice is not easy – being young and inexperienced and working with competent adults for the first time, is not for the faint-hearted. As time has passed, I have become more resilient and more determined to be the best I can.”
Balancing the demands of on-the-job learning with coursework can be difficult, but Anthony emphasised the importance of time management. “Time management is crucial, and this is a skill I have developed and worked on continuously”.
In general, Anthony has found joy and fulfilment on this ride. “An electrical apprenticeship is so varied – particularly at GF Electrical – the different places and jobs daily mean that no two days are the same.” He fondly remembered an experience testing smoke heads in a care home, stating, “Meeting the residents and showing them compassion, whilst they asked about what I was doing, I shall never forget.”
College attendance, though a weekly commitment, has been a source of camaraderie and support.
Anthony noted, “I enjoy meeting the other apprentices and finding out how they are progressing. The tutors are all happy to share their expertise – I find it a positive and supporting learning environment – once a week has been perfect for me.”
As Anthony reflects on his apprenticeship so far, he does so with a sense of pride and accomplishment. With each new challenge conquered and milestone achieved, he moves one step closer to realising his dream of becoming a proficient and respected electrician.
