BE AWARE OF BLACK FRIDAY!

Black Friday is a prime time for finding great deals on electronics, but it also increases the risk of encountering counterfeit products. Counterfeit electrical devices can be extremely dangerous because they often lack the safety features that certified products include.

Counterfeit products often skip essential safety features, such as proper insulation or thermal protection, which help prevent overheating and electrical fires.

These products may also lack overload protection, which can cause short circuits or lead to electrical shocks, especially with high-voltage items like chargers or appliances.

Here are some tips to avoid counterfeit products and ensure electrical safety:

  1. Buy from Reputable Retailers
  • Stick to trusted retailers, whether shopping online or in-store. Reputable sellers are more likely to carry genuine, certified products that meet electrical safety standards.
  • Be cautious of deals on unfamiliar websites or from third-party sellers on online marketplaces, as these can sometimes sell counterfeit goods.
  1. Check for Certification Marks
  • Genuine electrical products should have certification marks such as CE.
  • Counterfeit products may have fake or missing certifications. Look for a clear, legitimate certification label to ensure the product meets safety requirements.
  1. Inspect the Packaging and Product Quality
  • Counterfeit products often have lower-quality packaging, misspellings, or inconsistent fonts and colours.
  • Genuine products will have clear, professional packaging and materials, while counterfeits might feel cheaply made or lack brand logos.
  1. Verify Serial Numbers
  • Check if the product has a visible serial number or batch code, especially for more expensive items like laptops, smartphones, or appliances.
  • Some brands allow you to verify the product’s authenticity by entering the serial number on their website, so check if this option is available.
  1. Avoid Deals that Seem “Too Good to Be True”
  • Counterfeit products often lure in buyers with ultra-low prices. While Black Friday deals can be fantastic, be wary of prices that are far lower than the average.
  • If a price is suspiciously low, it could indicate that the product is counterfeit or substandard.
  1. Be Careful with Online Marketplaces
  • Sites that host third-party sellers may have a higher risk of counterfeit items. Check the seller’s ratings and reviews, and ensure they are a verified retailer if the platform offers this feature.
  • Stick to official brand stores or directly from the retailer’s website whenever possible.
  1. Research the Product
  • Look up the product model and specifications on the manufacturer’s website. Counterfeit products may look similar but can differ in size, colour, or design details.
  • Compare the product you’re considering with the official specs and images to detect any discrepancies.
  1. Understand Return and Warranty Policies
  • Legitimate retailers will generally offer returns and warranties on genuine products. Counterfeit products typically lack warranties or will be rejected by the manufacturer for repairs.
  • Be cautious if the retailer does not offer a clear return or warranty policy.
  1. Look for Tamper-Proof Seals
  • Many brands use tamper-proof seals to ensure that a product hasn’t been opened or tampered with.
  • If the packaging looks resealed or the seal is missing, it may indicate a counterfeit or previously used product.

By following these safety tips, you can make sure you’re buying genuine, safe products on Black Friday. This extra diligence helps keep you and your family safe while enjoying your new electronics.
