Our Managing Director, Gary, recently went to Bournemouth and Poole College to give advice to the Level 2 Electrical Students who are keen to secure future apprenticeships. It turned into Q&A session, and these were the three most relevant questions asked, so we thought it would be helpful for this week to share:
How can I stand out from other candidates?
Put an effort into applying for the position and ensure it comes from you! We have plenty of enquiries that come from friends and family. This is not a good first impression and makes us wonder if the candidate really wants the opportunity.
We don’t expect perfect grammar and punctuation in covering letters, CV’s or on our application form. It’s obvious who has written them, so ensure it comes from the applicant, not another…or AI. An employer wants to know you and why you are pursuing this career path.
If you get an opportunity for an interview, make an effort in your appearance. We don’t expect a suit and tie, but joggers and a hoodie are not going to create the best impression.
Be aware that it is a competitive situation you are in, trying to find an apprenticeship. Last year we had over 55 applications for 1 placement, and we only take 6 maybe 8 through to interview stage.
Will I be employed after my apprenticeship ends?
We will always look to keep the apprentices that we spent time training.
But your dedication, skills, and work ethic during your apprenticeship are key. A strong performance increases your chances of being offered a permanent position.
While there’s no guarantee of employment at the end, your chances are very good, if you’ve put the effort in. Not just the college and your coursework. Learn and listened to your senior’s guidance, shown commitment and initiative, become a skilled and trusted apprentice that the team can rely on.
An apprenticeship is a great opportunity not just a position. It provides you with valuable skills, experience, and a foot in the door of your chosen industry. And after you get your qualifications, there is so much more to continue to learn from your employer to take you even further up the ladder.
What is a normal working day like as an apprentice?
* Work Hours: Generally, starts on site at 0800 (sometimes earlier). Full-time apprenticeships are 40 hours per week
* Off-the-Job Training: A portion of your time (often 20%) will be dedicated to off-the-job training. This could include attending college, online courses, or working on assignments related to your apprenticeship.
* On-the-Job Training: The majority of your time will be spent learning on the job, working alongside experienced professionals, and gradually taking on more responsibilities as you develop your skills.
Daily Activities:
* Varied Tasks: You can expect a variety of tasks, from assisting with basic duties to participating in more complex projects as you gain experience.
* Learning and Development: A key part of your day will be learning new skills, receiving feedback, and applying what you’ve learned in your off-the-job training.
* Teamwork: You’ll likely be working as part of a team, collaborating with colleagues, and contributing to the overall work environment.
* Mentorship: Many apprenticeships involve working closely with a mentor or supervisor who will guide you, provide support, and help you develop your skills.
* Working Conditions: The work environment will often be cold, wet and uncomfortable. You can guarantee the day we have outside work it will be raining and windy!
* Rest Breaks: You’ll be entitled to rest breaks during your working day, and there are regulations regarding minimum rest periods.
