What do we think makes a good apprentice.

Each year we look for someone different when we decide if we have an opportunity to offer a placement. Things that impact our process depend on the team we have and the current dynamics of each member. What future work is coming up and what skills or personality may benefit the company.

We have taken apprentices on straight out of school at 16.  Some that have done the Level 2, that have changed direction after giving further education a go or had chosen a different path that wasn’t quite right. We have also had what I would term ‘mature’ apprentices. Those that have chosen to leave the career path they have been on for the past few years. (David’s story)

What type of character makes a good Electrical Apprentice?

Each apprentice has qualities that we felt would assist them become a great team player and support our existing workforce. But there a characteristic that over the years we have found that all our successful apprentices have:

Main key to success is showing your willingness and aptitude for work. Being in a trade is old fashioned graft; getting dirty, putting in long hours, up at work early doors, being in small spaces, being up a ladder or higher still. Being on your feet or knees most of the day, lifting, sweeping, etc. In the heat or the cold, it doesn’t matter you have to turn up to work and you can always guarantee the jobs outside are on the rainiest of days!

You must be a practical person and excuse the punn…. but bright too. Don’t fall into the trap and believe that being in the trade is for those that don’t do so well in school and fail exams. You’ll have plenty of exams you need to pass to be qualified as an electrician. Maths and science will help on your CV so make sure you’ve put that effort in for your GCSEs!

Comradery, sometimes reflected in team activities or sport. Being part of a team, learning to take instruction from those that are there to lead and teach. A person that will be a part of a group to make sure you all finish together and not just be out for yourself.

We can’t guarantee yet that we have a placement for someone to join. Keep an eye out on our socials and sign up to our mailing list, where if and when, the position becomes available you’ll be the first to hear. Also note that we do not start to look into this till around May time at the earliest.
