As it’s National Apprenticeship Week we thought you’d like to hear how one of our newest apprentices is settling into the role. Henry is a 3rd year apprentice.
He did his first two years with another but circumstances brought him to GF Electrical. He has been with us for just over 7 months now. As his earlier employment was mainly domestic work, he was assigned to a big domestic rewire we are doing in Ringwood and has played a significant role in the fantastic work there. Recently though Henry has had a chance to go to some other sites, get involved with other projects, and even small jobs and maintenance alone.
“I have been on 3 different projects since starting at GF. One of the most challenging and interesting projects so far has been the domestic rewire. Seeing the process of an entire project from the initial first fix to testing the installation after the second fix, has really expanded my knowledge.
Second is Bristol Maid, this has been a different type of work which is more heavy-duty appliances and cables, giving me a lot of variety in the electrical industry.
Finally, some small remedial work on my own. This has helped me learn a lot! I need to figure things out by myself and doing so makes me feel I’m achieving. It’s great to be part of a company that has that trust in me. It puts my skills and initiative to the test and gives me a great sense of accomplishment.”
How have you managed to balance your on-the-job training with my classroom learning?
“As I have 1 day a week for college, I can solely focus on the theory side of my apprenticeship and the remaining 4 days of the week working as an electrician. Throughout my apprenticeship, I have discovered that the course and site work go hand in hand and the combination improves my ability in both sides.”
“Moving my apprenticeship mid-way to GF Electrical has exceeded my expectations tremendously. I have enjoyed my time here and I’ve really developed my skills. I get on with everybody in the company which makes me look forward to going to work. I’m encouraged to improve which is helping me complete my portfolio and pushing me towards that qualification.”
GF Electrical takes pride on developing our apprentices and ensuring that we support them throughout. “The company has developed my apprenticeship by giving me a wide variety of work, so I have experience in many categories and lots towards my college portfolio. They value my college time and happily allocate time during work hours towards college work.”
It has been great to see how well Henry has progressed over the last 7 months. He is already a solid part of the team. We look forward to watching him continue to grow and work towards completing his NVQ & AM2.
